Flour is a powder made of cereal grains, and is the main ingredient of bread, which is a staple food for millions of people around the world. Wheat flour is one of the most important foods in North America and Europe, while other cultures favor other types of flour. In order to have fresh bread, quality ingredients are important, none more so than flour. In its most basic form bread is prepared by baking, frying or steaming dough consisting of flour, water and salt.
One of the ways you can ensure that you have the freshest bread is to bake it yourself. Bread machines make the task a little bit easier than making it the old-fashioned way with a rolling pin and working the dough by hand. Most bread machines make good bread, but do not be disillusioned to think that you will save money. A Consumer Reports article details that the cost is about the same per slice as the average store-bought bread.
The process of making bread has not changed much over the centuries until recently, with the introduction of automatic bread machines for the home. The machine has revolutionized the making of bread and with very little effort in just over two hours you can have fresh baked bread. Selecting a machine may be a bigger job than making the bread itself, as there are more than 30 bread machines from 15 manufacturers that you can choose from.
However, if you do not want to make your own bread, consult your Yellow Pages; there is probably a bakery within a mile of your house. Find out what time they open and show up about a half hour after that to get the freshest of breads.
