Cornbread is sometimes referred to as Quick Bread, because it is easy to fix and quick to bake. It is made in different ways according to the state or country you live in. Cornbread is a very popular bread in the United States, especially in the south. You can serve it with any meal and it is always a favorite, hot or cold.
It is an easy way you can get your iron, vitamins, and fiber. In the south, many older people like to crumble it into a glass of buttermilk and eat it that way. It is also used in side dishes like stuffing, chicken and dressing, hushpuppies, johnny cakes, hot water bread, cracklin bread, and skillet bread (hoecakes). It is used in almost every home in America in many different ways. There are few other kinds of bread with the same versatility.
In each of the regions of the country, baking cornbread is different. They often reflect regional tastes, such as Southwestern cornbread with green chilies and cheese. In the South the basic cornbread ingredients usually include whole corn ground fine, and either white or yellow corns are used (the yellow is sweeter than the white corn). Skillet cornbread is the favorite in the south. The basic ingredients for making Southern cornbread is corn meal, all-purpose flour, sugar(if you want a sweet taste) baking powder, salt, milk or buttermilk, vegetable oil, and eggs. Mix them all together and pour into a basic skillet that has been greased well and bake until brown at about 425 degrees.
