I'm very interested in reading about the lifestyle of early American settlers and how they were able to keep warm during harsh New England winters. So, I read that quilting was a necessary craft for these early pioneers. For the history of quilting and more, you only need to go to the TodaysQuilters website.

www.todaysquilters.com/pioneer-quilting-bee.html) for information on the pioneer quilting bee. Quilters, at this point in America's history, were almost always women. Women used these gatherings as a way to socialize outside of church, sharing their skills in quilting and their knowledge of raising a home.
Attached is a video clip of a quilting bee showing all of the equipment now used in making quilts. As you can see in the video, there are many of those pioneer patterns still be used in quilting today.
