During the years of Spanish exploration in the 15th Century, there was a great demand for precious gems and metals, especially gold. The Spanish explored and conquered most of South America in this quest for gold. Search for gold usually involved a lot of dangerous factors that, in the end, hindered a successful trip back to Europe. These factors included pirates, turbulent storms on the seas and, of course, human greed. This led to treasure being buried, hidden or lost (e.g. in a shipwreck), which, in turn, contributed to the acquisition of old Spanish treasure maps.
Spanish treasure maps could have been made for many reasons. You should check out the following blog for more details on these treasure maps: http://www.spanishgolds.com/blog/2009/10/20/ancient-spanish-gold-treasure-maps.html. I don't know if I would have the strength to hunt for this old Spanish gold.
